Art Elements/ Principles of Design- Vocabulary


1.) Line- A line is a path that a point makes and it can vary in with length and direction.

2.) Shape- The characteristic surface configuration of a thing; an outline or contour. Some common shapes are squares, circles, triangles,and ovals. 


3.) Color- When light is reflected off an object, color is what the eye sees. The primary colors are red, yellow and blue. The secondary colors are orange, purple and green. 


4.) Value- Value is the lightness or darkness of a color, shadows, darkness, contrasts and light are all values in artwork


5.) Texture- It is the feeling or consistency of an object


6.) Form/Volume- The visible three dimensional shape or configuration of something. 


Design Principles:


1.) Balance- An art and design principle concerned with the arrangement of one or more elements in a work of art so that they appear symmetrical (even) or asymmetrical (uneven) in design and proportion.


2.) Harmony- The unity of all the visual elements of a composition achieved by repetition of the same characteristics.


3.) Contrast- Contrast is created by using opposites near or beside one another, such as a light object next to a dark object or a rough texture next to a smooth texture. 


4.) Movement- Directs the eye through the image and leads it to the main subject or purpose of the image. 


5.) Rhythm- When the regular repetition of particular forms or elements occurs in a work of art, that work is said to have rhythm. It suggests motion.
